Redwork became popular in the 1880's and continued in popularity until the 1930's.  Redwork is simply outline stitch embroidery done with turkey red embroidery floss.  Redwork is quick to work up since you are using only one color of floss.  Turkey red is a deep rich shade of red that is very similar to DMC#304.  There are many, many shades of red floss available, so pick a shade that you enjoy.  There is no "wrong" shade of red.
